Measuring Instruments of Width and Diameter of Steel Products

pp. 613-622
抄録
Problems of on-line width and diameter gauges are their accuracy and reliability, due to the severe environments of steel plants.
Three types of instruments reported here are based on the principles similar to those of the currently avairable instruments.
By the use of new photo-electronic devices and a digital technique the accuracy and reliability have been improved, and reliable on-line measurements have been accomplished.
In this paper, the performances of the cold slab width, cold strip width, and hot bar diameter gauges are presented.
Effect of Various Factors on Radiation Thickness Gauge

pp. 623-628
抄録
Thickness measurements by radiation are influenced by various factors: steel compositions, water film on the surface of steel strip, location of steel strip, temperature variation, and heat treatment. We have performed factory tests to determine the effects of the above factors.
Results are summarized as follows:
(1) The effect of the composition can be calculated theoretically, and the theoretical results agree with those obtained in the factory tests.
(2) The compensation for strip temperature variations varies in each mill. It can, however, be neglected in the range of ±50°C.
(3) Effects of steel density change due to the hot rolling could not be detected in these tests.
New Microwave Thickness Gage
Hiromu SOGA, Katuhiro MINAMIDA, Riichiro KUSAKA
pp. 629-641
抄録
In the rolling processes, the thickness or shape measurement of products is one of the most important problems. Among non-contact measurements X-ray or γ-ray thickness gages are widely used today, but they are not satisfactory with respects to the accuracy, response time, and safety.
The present authors have proposed a new microwave thickness measurement method using cylindrical open cavities. The principle of this method is based on the fact that the resonant frequency of the open cavity is proportional to the gap, x, between the given metal and the cavity edge. The characteristics of the open cavity are essentially important in designing the measuring device. In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the open cavity and the quality factor, Q, are discussed. These characteristics have been ascertained experimentally.
A prototype microwave thickness gage has been designed and built in the laboratory. In the laboratory experiment, the proposed new method provides better results regardless of the thickness of metal plate than the conventional instruments. The results obtained through the experiments at a hot finishing line confirmed the possibility of the practical use, but several problems associated with the practical application still remain unsolved.
Development of Hot-strip Crownmeter Using γ-ray
Kazuo MIYAGAWA, Isamu ICHIJIMA, Takeji EGASHIRA
pp. 642-652
抄録
Strip crown measurements have been requested by strip mills for the production of uniform strip. An online strip crown meter has been developed using Am γ-ray. This paper deals with the problems for the development of the crown meter. Main features of this instrument are using relatively large radiation source and narrow rectangular γ-ray beam. It takes about one minute to scarm entire with of strip, and the accuracy of two microns of thickness was obtained.

On-line Measurement of the Length of Rolled Materials
Seiji FUJII, Eimei ONISHI, Yoshihiro HORIUCHI
pp. 653-658
抄録
Recently the importance of the length measurement of rolled materials has been increasing. Automatic length measuring equipments are expected to contribute not only to the improvement of operational facilities but also to the optimization of the cutting of materials and the saving of labor.
About the measuring equipments of the length of rolled materials, many reports have been issued in these several years, but few of them are operating well.
This report describes two kinds of automatic length measuring equipments that have been installed in the wide flange beam mill, Fukuyama Works, Nippon Kokan K.K. One of them is installed at the delibery of the finishing mill, and the other at the delibery of the roller straightener. The accuracies of the equipments are within ±200mm and ±20mm, respectively.
Microwave Object Detector
Toshio SHIRAIWA, Sumio KOBAYASHI
pp. 659-667
抄録
A new instrument for detecting the object using microwaves has been developed. This instrument, which is called MOD (Microwave Object Detector), consists of three basic units, that is, the transmitter, receiver, and control unit. Details of each unit and characteristics of MOD are discussed. MOD has several advantages over conventional detectors such as hot metal detectors, photoelectric relays and so on. An important advantage of MOD is due to the properties of microwaves that they suffer little attenuation in steam, rain, smoke, flame and dusty atmospheres, and therefore MOD can be utilized more extensively than conventional ones. Two typical applications of MOD are presented, i. e., the detection of the position of pipe-edge in the tube rolling process and the level detection in the hoppers of cokes or sintered ore, where no conventional sensors are useful because of their severe environments.
Comparative Study of Radiation Pyrometer and Blackbody
Toshio SHIRAIWA, Yoichi TAMAMURA
pp. 668-678
抄録
The characteristics of four types of radiation pyrometers in which Si cell, Phototube (Sl), thermopile, and PbS cell are used respectively, have been studied. Influences of emissivity variation, water film, steam, and scale on pyrometer readings are measured. A rotary furnace is used as a model that treats moving hot steel sheets.
As the standard of radiation pyrometers, a blackbody furnace and its effective emissivity has been investigated.
Results obtained are as follows.
1) The effects of emissivity variation, water film, steam, and scale on are smaller for the radiation pyrometers using shorter wave lengths (<lu) than for those using longer wave lengths.
2) The temperature distributions of the spherical blackbody furnace are excellent at present momen and the estimated effective emissivity is expected to be greater than 0.995.
