This paper describes a verbal representation of a topographic map. First, we carried out an experiment that human subjects put a shape of two-dimensional functions drawn by contour lines in words. Next, we extracted some key words from the words used in the experiment and defined the key words by gradients of the functions' surfaces. Finally, we applied the key words to a topographic map and represented it in the key words. A correlation between mountains on the map, which was hard to be shown by contour lines, was distinctly given by the verbal representation.
