Effects of End-tab Shapes on Plastic Deformation Capacity of wide-flange Beams Connected with SHS Column

Mototsugu TABUCHI, Tsuyoshi TANAKA, Tomoharu IGUCHI

pp. 1-16

Abstract

Cyclic loading tests were carried out to investigate the effects of end-tab on plastic rotation capacity of H-beam connected with SHS-column. In the specimens used steel end-tab plate, the specimens with leaving end-tab and cutting off a circular arc part were fractured by premature cracks at bottom of slit between beam flange and steel end-tab plate. The specimen with the steel end-tab leaving 5mm width also fractured at bottom of the slit. However the plastic rotation capacity was improved. To use L-shaped end-tab made by ceramic was the most effective method for improving the plastic rotation capacity.

A study on the quality of studs welded in horizontal position and the possibility of post-welding repair

Kousuke TSUJI, Masaaki SHIMAMOTO, Kazuo TATEISHI

pp. 17-24

Abstract

As studs come to be applied to complicated structures, the demand to make the stud joints in horizontal welding position arises recently, though such welding position often leads to the occurrence of flaws. In this study, imperfect studs were made by the welding in horizontal position, and their quality in terms of shapes, flaws and material properties were investigated. After that, repair work by post-welding was carried out on the imperfect studs in order to find their possibility and limitation.

pp. 25-32

Abstract

The behavior of WF beam-to-SHS column connections using special shaped high strength bolts called Paddle Bolts was investigated experimentally, using full-scale specimens. From the results of this test the static behavior of this type beam-to-column connections was made clear and this type of connections can be used practically both as semi-rigid and rigid connections depending on the reinforcement at the skin plate of SHS column.

Structural Characteristic of Convex Curved Steel Plate-Concrete Composite Slab

Takeshi YAMADA, Yasuhiro OKAMOTO, Katsu NUMATA, Shigeyuki MATSUI

pp. 33-44

Abstract

Steel plate-concrete composite slab has been attracted attention due to many advantages such as high structural performance, work-ability and reducing construction period. The general composite slab has a bottom skin plate with some stiffeners to make stiffness large. A new composite slab takes into the membrane effect of bottom skin plate without any bending stiffeners for concrete casting. Static and fatigue tests and elasto-plastic finite element analysis were carried out to make clear the structural characteristics of the new composite slab.

Strength Estimation of Tubular Steel Trussed Frames with Eccentric Joints

Hiroshi KOMATSU, Akio FUKUSHIMA

pp. 45-54

Abstract

This paper discussed strength estimation of steel pipe structure with gusset plate connection in which branch tube axis is eccentric for the main tube axis. The author has carried out experiment and analysis of the member subject models as past researches. On the basis of the past researches, this study carried out experiment and FEM for the 2 layers truss-frame. Based on this study result, the strength evaluation is possible by the technique, which is similar to the member subject model in the frame model. Especially, in case of the slenderness ratio is 30 or less, the negative eccentric joint proves to be an effective measure.

Seismic Damage Distribution of Beams and Joint Panels in Steel Moment Frames

Seiji MUKAIDE, Susumu KUWAHARA, Hisashi JIKUMARU

pp. 55-65

Abstract

In this paper, the effects of various parameters (elastic deformation ratio, strength ratio of left beam to right, stiffness ratio of left beam to right, and base shear coefficient) on seismic damage of joint panels and beams are shown. Seismic responses are analyzed with the fishbone-shaped frame models whose horizontal load carrying capacity and elastic stiffness are constant. The results are as follows. The story drift of frame is not influenced by the above-mentioned parameters so much. But, the damage distribution among members is influenced considerably . Therefore, It is necessary to consider not only strength ratio of members which determines collapse mechanism but also other parameters for the purpose to predict more accurate damage of each member by earthquake.
