Abstract

The purpose of this paper i s to indicate the structural capacity of 490N/mm class Cold Press-formed Rectangular Column by being guaranteed sharpy impact value all over section of column, "BCP325T". We indicate average mechanical properties and high deformation capacity for "BCP325T" by mechanical test and bending cyclic test.

Study on the Effect of Reinforcement of Beam Flange End with Rib Plates

Shigeru YOSHIKAI, Yoshio FUKADA, Takahiko SUZUKI, Koji MORITA, Ben KATO

pp. 11-24

Abstract

Horizontal haunched beams are being increasingly used for preventing brittle fractures in the vicinity of beam-to-boxed-column moment resisting connections. The authors propose the design method of horizontal haunched beams with rib plates and the optimum procedure of welding rib plates to beam flanges. Furthermore, this report presents the effect of reinforcement and the behavior of beam-end by experiment with full scale beam-to-column connections.

An Experimental Study on Reinforcement of Steel Bridge Piers by Using Thermal Prestressing Method

Kunihiko YAMAGUCHI, Osamu YOSHIKAWA, Hiroshi NAKAI

pp. 25-32

Abstract

The fillet of the comer part of steel bridge piers is significantly small, and a fatigue crack appears in the fillet due to the excessive stress concentration. Then, a splice plate is fixed to the piers by the high strength bolts as an emergency reinforcement against the fatigue cracks. A new constructional process by using the thermal prestressing method was developed herein. It was predicted that the development of the fatigue cracks could be prevented by this thermal prestressing method. The fatigue crack was so examined through the fatigue test, that the stiffening effect was actually confirmed. Furthermore, it is suggested that the reinforcement was necessary for the comer part on the compression side of the bridge pier in order to avoid the fatigue cracks due to the excessive stress concentration.

Vibration Behavior of Single Layer Latticed Cylindrical Roofs under Seismic Motion and the Static Load Modeling

Seishi YAMADA, Yukihiro MATSUMOTO, Shiro KATO

pp. 33-46

Abstract

In this paper the earthquake response behavior of single layer latticed cylindrical shell roofs constituted with steel members has been numerically analyzed. The input waves are of the artificial earthquake waves having the various phase characteristics and target spectra. The relation between the strain energy and the various response quantities has been investigated in detail. An alternative seismic loading model for design has also been proposed and its applicability has been discussed.

DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE TOWER UNDER LEVELII EARTHQUAKE GROUND MOTION

Shehata E. ABDEL RAHEEM, Toshiro HAYASHIKAWA

pp. 47-58

Abstract

The dynamic analysis of cable-stayed bridges in seismically active regions is potentially important to highway facilities design. A quite general nonlinear dynamic analysis is developed for a realistic prediction of tower seismic performance of cable-stayed bridges. One of the most important decisions in carrying out proper analysis is to select a design earthquake that adequately represents the ground motion expected at certain site and in particular the motion that would drive the bridge structure to its critical response. So an extensive series of seismic response analyses using a wide range of ground motions are carried out. The ductility demands and base shear demands due to near-fault and long duration ground motions are compared. The stipulation of code standard input excitation limitations and the present calculated demands are discussed.

Mechanical properties and weldabilities of H section steels refined in electric furnaces

Masanori MORI, Takashi OGIMA, Toshiomi ITATANI, Yoshihiro FUKUDA

pp. 59-70

Abstract

The consumption amount of H section steels refined in electric furnaces increases recently. It is very important to know their mechanical properties and weldabilities for practical usages. This paper reports the tensile properties, V-notch Charpy impact properties, hardness and microstructures in mother metals, heat affected zones and deposited metals of the H section steels for building constructions. They have enough and appropriate mechanical properties, chemical compositions and standard microstructures according to thermal histories of welding.
