Propagation Behavior of Fatigue Crack Originated from the Weld Root of fillet Welded Cruciform Joints

Abstract

Fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior from weld root of load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints have been examined under the condition that stress range or stress intensity factor range is constant and stress ratio is kept high or low. Welding residual stresses in the joints, which are expected to have considerable influence on the fatigue crack propagation behavior, have also been measured by means of cutting method and analyzed by performing thermal conduction analyses and elasto-plastic stress analyses based on the finite element method.

A Study on Size Effect of Fatigue Strength at Weld Joint Toe

Abstract

It is well known that fatigue strength of weld joint decreases with increasing the size of weld joint and that fatigue strength of large size girder specimens are much less than those of small joint specimens. In this study, concerning the size effect of fatigue strength, difference of stress concentration due to size and configuration of weld joint are mainly discussed. Previous fatigue test results of several types of weld joints are rearranged. According to the rearrangement, there are large differences between large scale girder specimens and small joint specimens. The difference of fatigue strength between small joint specimens can be almost evaluated by stress concentration concerning the difference of sizes of welded joints. On the other hand, difference between large scale girder specimens and small joint specimens are also affected by the presence of flange and stress condition or loading patterns.

Effects of Stress-strain Relationships of Steel Materials upon Strain-Rate at Beam Ends

Abstract

Effects of stress-strain relationships of the steel material upon the strain rate of steel beams are discussed analytically. The parameter of the analysis is stress-strain relationships of steel materials. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1)The stress-strain relationships have very large influence upon the strain-rate of the beams. If the material has the stress-strain relationships with plastic flow, the strain-rate of the member is extreme large. But in case of the relationship of round-house type, the strain-rate is very low. 2)During an severe earthquake, the strain-rate of beams changes. At the first cycle yielding, the strain-rate is very large. But after that the strain-rate becomes low and the influence of strain-rate becomes little.

Abstract

This paper presents the outline of damage to pipe piers caused by the Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake and the analysis of these piers under cyclic loading. rl'he local buckling and the peeling of paint were observed at the transitional point of the pipe thickness. The cyclic behavior of these piers is analyzed by the elasto-plastic finite element method. The analysis is done under 3 types of cyclic loading. According to the results of analysis, the buckling mode and the distribution of the yielded zone match the actual damage, and the most damaged pier is proved to have less seismic capacity.

Development of Hysteretic Damper using Eccentrical Brace System

Abstract

Y-shape brace damper is a vibration control system against earth quakes. It is composed of two braces and a vertical member ( Link ) that possesses superior plastic deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity. On the basis of a lot of experimental investigations, practical design recommendations are proposed. They contain depth to thickness ratio, restoring force characteristics, strength ratio of link to frame and equations for evaluating damage of link, in order to expect good performance of buildings. In addition, some buildings with Y- brace damper to prevent from damage of their main frames are shown.

Abstract

Based on the results of the tests on the bending of H-shaped steel beams with high-strength bolt joints, we proposed formulas to predict the ultimate tensile strength of flanges for outer tearing fractures, and webs for inner tearing fractures and end fractures. The applicability of the prediction formulas, which were previously obtained from the steel plate joint tests, to the flanges and webs was discussed. SS400 steel, 590Mpa-grade and 780Mpa-grade high-quality steels were used for test specimens.
