On Plastic Deformation Capacity of Notched Plates

Yoshikazu MORIWAKI, Kenji HAYASHI

pp. 1-12

Abstract

In order to establish the ultimate state design, it should be veri fied the mechanical properties of tension members as well as compression members in the ultimate state. In this paper, resting on this viewpoint, tension tests on notched plates were carried out to investigate the influence of mechanical properties of materials and stress concentration on the plastic deformation capacity, and to clarify the mecanical characteristics of tension members. And a practical formula is proposed to evaluate the plastic deformation capacity of tension members. Moreover, it is also clarified the parameter to control the plastic deformation fields of tension members in the ultimate state.

Technology of Steel Structure in Niigata - Sendai Gas Pipeline Project

Takashi EGAWA, Hideaki SUGAI, Takami MURASE

pp. 13-27

Abstract

Pipeline from Niigata to Sendai was completed in March. Pipeline construction consists of various kinds of engineering works such as material technology, welding technology, civil engineering, etc. However it is not too much to say that steel structural engineering is one of the most important technologyamong them. In this thesis we would like to mention about the following items regarding steel structural engineering associated with the project. 1. Material technology and welding method 2. Field bending method 3. Seismic design of pipeline 4. Bridge design.

Plastic Deformation Capacity of Concrete filled Steel Square Tubular Columns Influence of Annealing to Steel Tube

pp. 29-35

Abstract

This paper reports the influence of annealing to cold formed steel tube on deformation capacity of concrete filled steel square tubular columns. We proposed the formula of plastic deformation capacity with axial force ratio and width-thickness ratio. By using the proposed formula of plastic deformation capacity and limit rotation angle, we confirm non-influence of annealing to steel tube on plastic deformation capacity of co ncrete steel square tubular columns.

Development and Application of Interactive Program for Fatigue Assessments of Steel Structures Based on JSSC Recommendations

Takeshi MORI, Masashi KAJIHARA, Yousuke HASEGAWA

pp. 37-45

Abstract

This report introduces the contents of an interative program briefly, which we have developed, for assessing the safety of steel structures against fatigue and for estimating those fatigue lives or remaining lives based on the Fatigue Design Recommen dations by Japanese Society of Steel Construction. Furthermore, following examinations are carried out by using this program. They are influences of span and static strength of steel used on fatigue life of railway and highway bridges, and an influence of plate thickness on fatigue strength of cruciform fillet welded joints with ground smooth weld toes.

pp. 47-60

Abstract

Push-out test is popular method to obtained the shear strength of headed stud shear connector. However, the push-out test's results depend upon the symmetry of the specimen and the loading system. We investigate on standard push-out test method for headed stud shear connectors, to take notice of the slip rigidity and the shear strength. The width of concrete slab and the stairs of headed stud shear connectors are effective on the mechanical properties of headed stud shear connectors. In case of the uniform thickness of concrete slab, the standard push-out. test method is proposed as follows. ? The stairs of headed stud shear connectors is one. The width of concrete slab is over 400mm.

The Demands of Performance for Wide Flats and Steel Plates Produced by Electric Furnaces to Satisfactory plastic Def ormabilities

Morihisa FUJIMOTO, Hirofumi AOKI, Tadao NAKAGOMI, Jun NISHIZAWA

pp. 61-72

Abstract

In order to clarify the demands of the performance of wide flats and steel plates produced by electric furnaces, the requirement for the ratio of the cumulative inelastic deformation to the elastic deformation(req η) of the members are calculated . The experimental results from loading test of beam-to-column welded connection are evaluated by req η. To prevent the fracture type E or F and satisfy the plastic deformabilities with type of site welding, the sulfur content of base metal should he controlled under 0.008%, and the absolved energy at 0°C should he satisfied over 50J.

Super - Low - Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Steel Pier Base Joint

pp. 73-82

Abstract

Since the number of excessive seismic loading cycles is observed to be less than ten, such very short term loading experiments are conducted to investigate the super - low - cycle fatigue behavior of steel pier base joint. Cracks are initiated in such an early stage as the second cycle at the inter section of a longitudinal corner weld between a column flange and a column web and a transverse fillet weld between a column flange and a base plate, and prop agated to fracture a flange plate rapidly after corner welds are broken. The crack initiation life can be evaluated by means of elasto - plastic finite element analysis, using a cyclic stress-strain curve.
